The Heritage of Care

The Heritage of Care is an exciting new project, which will explore the heritage of volunteering in hospice care.

Both current and former hospice volunteers are being sought to bring this project, being run by Eyes Wide Open with support from Help the Hospices and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
This project will look at the legacy of the early pioneering volunteers in hospices and use this to explore what contribution volunteering makes to palliative care. Widely acknowledged as constituting a core part of hospice services, early volunteers were central to the development of the hospice movement since late 1960s to the present day. This movement has led to a transformation in care for the dying not only in the UK but also worldwide.

This project will use todays volunteers to explore, describe and celebrate the contributions of the early pioneering volunteers through the use of archival work, oral histories and photography. It will reflect on their and Dame Cicely Saunders' legacy and how their work impacts on today’s volunteers, patients and families. See our gallery for a selection of images of the project so far
